Term 1 Overview
Ms. Candido’s Class: Term Plan
LANGUAGE ARTS
Daily Skills: We work on daily morning activities, focusing on grammar, writing, & editing.
Nelson Literacy: These new books have colourful readings that are connected to science, health & safety, & social studies. Activities incorporate reading, writing, listening & speaking.
Writing: We will be looking at the different structures & styles of writing paragraphs, essays & stories.
Novel Study: We will begin Charlie & the Chocolate Factory. Readings will be done in class & finished for homework. Comprehension questions will be assigned.
Reading Comprehension: Students will read various passages & learn to answer questions about the readings. Focus will be on understanding the reading & on writing full-sentence answers to the questions.

We have the Canadian Spelling program at IQRA. This text will further develop grammar & reading skills within the spelling program. Below is an outline of our program each week. Please help your child to manage his/her time wisely.
Spelling
MONDAY: Spelling unit assigned & words recorded in the students’ planners.
THURSDAY: Spelling Unit Due.
FRIDAY: Weekly Spelling Test with a bonus word & a dictation listening practice.
SOCIAL STUDIES
In social studies, we will learn about the diverse cultures in our classroom & home communities to discover how we can get along in our communities. Later, we will work on mapping skills. Students will be expected to know about the location of the continents, oceans, & hemispheres of the world. Students will learn how to read & use maps & timelines. They will also learn all about basic survival skills, & will investigate our Canadian environments & landforms. We will also begin to learn about Canada's aboriginal peoples.
SCIENCE
Science in term 1 will be focused on Habitats & Communities. Students will learn about concepts such as food webs, food chains, & the adaptations of living things. We will also focus on environmental responsibility & how our choices impact our environment.
MATH
Students will start out the term by learning about patterns in mathematics. By the end of the term students will be able to identify, represent, describe & extend patterns in charts & tables. They will also be able to use patterns to solve problems & equations.
Numeration will begin in October, & students will learn to represent, describe, compare, & order numbers up to 10,000.
After that, students will work on addition & subtraction skills with 3 & 4 digit numbers.
Throughout the term we will also practice multiplication with 1-minute multiplication drills (up to the 11x tables), & we will work on basic math skills with our morning "Daily Skills" activities.
PHYSICAL EDUCATION
In physical education this term we will begin with cooperative outdoor games to build a class spirit while enjoying the warm September weather. As the cooler fall weather moves in, we will focus on more indoor activities, including a basketball unit, aerobic routines, & indoor cooperative games.
ART
Art this term will be focused on building basic art skills, such as sketching, self-expression, & self-confidence. We will look at some famous artists like Georgia O'Keeffe & will use art to express some of the ideas learned in the other subject areas such as language arts, HCE, & science.
HEALTH & CAREER EDUCATION (H.C.E)
Health & Career Education (HCE) this term will focus on the theme "All About Me." Students will be able to express their own attributes & work habits, & they will set personal short-term & long-term goals. They will also learn all about decision-making, problem solving skills & healthy food choices.

*Homework & news are displayed on our Homework Center of our classroom. Please check there for daily updates on homework, upcoming tests, & events
*Assignments must be handed in on time. Unfinished work will be given a zero. Please provide a note if there is any reason for an assignment being late. Time management is an important skill for grade 4 students to work on.
*Being on time for class is also very important. Each morning, students are responsible for participating in Daily Physical Activity (or DPA) as a part of their mark. Failure to attend will impact their grades.
*I will regularly keep in touch with student agendas. Please keep your eye on each of these handy communication tools to ensure you know what is happening with your child. Feel free to contact me if you have any questions.
