Mrs. Candido’s
Classroom Procedures
Absent/Late Students
Students who are absent from school are still responsible for completing all missed assignments & tests. Please see the homework pockets for missed work & complete the assignments as soon as possible.
All late students must check-in at the office to get a late slip. You will not be allowed into class without a late slip. Check with the Attendance Monitor to be sure he/she marks you as late instead of absent.
Dismissal & Bells
The bells of the school are for the teachers to know when there is a change of period. Students are not dismissed until the teacher excuses them.
Morning Routine
Each morning when you come into our classroom, you will see the Morning Instructions on the front whiteboard. You are responsible for following all instructions & getting to work immediately.
The Morning Instructions usually include:
What to hand-in, & where to hand it in.
A Daily Skills activity on the board and to begin immediately.
Other important instructions.
* When it is time to begin DPA, I will let you know, & we will continue Daily Skills after DPA. You should have a good amount completed by the time we are done DPA. We will check Daily Skills soon after DPA.
* Be sure you have everything you need from your locker, including your agenda. You may NOT go to your locker during class time.
**Check the Daily Schedule Board to see what you’ll need for the day.
* It is important to be on time for school so that you can complete you Daily Skills & DPA.
When you hand in homework it will be handed in to your pocket (out of the duo tang), with your name & date. Each week you can expect the following due days:
Monday: FSA Package Due (to be announced)
Tuesday: Novel Studies Questions Due (to be announced)
Thursday: Spelling Unit Due(handed it out Monday)
Friday: Weekly Spelling Test
Students can expect 30-60 mins. of homework, 3-5 days a week. Incomplete work will result in a zero.
Agendas will be checked by the teacher each day. Parents should sign it each evening to confirm that the homework is complete & check for upcoming due dates. Agendas are a tool for students to stay organized, but they can also be used for daily parent-teacher communication.
Weekly Class Jobs
The class jobs will be assigned weekly, & students will alternate on & off the job board each week. The jobs are as follows:
Library/Game monitor: Responsible for keeping the library and game shelves clean and neat.
Board Manager: Responsible for wiping the boards when teachers need help.
Desk inspector: Responsible for checking desks and making sure they are clean and neat.
Homework Helper: Responsible for checking if students have handed in homework.
Floor Manager: Responsible for sweeping the classroom DAILY, as needed. (All students will sweep their areas throughout the day)
Lunch Monitor: Responsible for checking if everyone has put lunch bags and garbage away.
Locker Monitor: Responsible for checking if locker doors are closed and kept clean.
Attendance Monitor: Responsible for taking attendance to the office and keeping track of late people.
*All students will get a chance to try each job (often times throughout the year).
Classroom Cleanliness
We are all responsible for keeping the classroom clean & tidy. Each group must sweep the floor around it, & each student must deposit all their garbage & recycling into the appropriate bins.
** Do not get up to use the garbage or recycling bins when the teacher is talking. Leave the items on your desk & do it after instruction time.
Other
No using the electric pencil sharpener during lessons or class discussions.
Do not touch anything in the teacher’s desk area without permission.
Please be gentle in the classroom:
*No physical contact *Walk *Use an "indoor voice"
Early Finishers
There should be absolutely no rushing to finish assignments. Take your time because there are no points for finishing 1st, & rushing can affect your grades.
However, if you are finished any assignment early, you may choose to do the following independently:
Check over the assignment carefully.
Finish other homework or class assignments.
Read a book.
Study spelling.
[(SOMETIMES) Choose a fun sheet/draw/colour.]
There is no talking when you are finished because it disturbs others who are still working.
Class Behaviour System
We have 3 levels of behaviour in this classroom: Green card, yellow card, red card, & consequence. Each student begins the day on "Green Card", & can either move down to "Yellow Card" or down to "Red Card", then "Consequence". Students who reach a consequence will either have extra homework or have a detention at lunch or recess, as determined by the teacher. Students who maintain their "Green Card" position at the end of the day will get their name placed in our Superstars’ Draw. Each week I choose 5 names from the draw, & each winner gets a prize. The more names you have in the bin, the better your chances of winning a prize!
May I Have Your Attention?
When I need you attention, I count backwards from 5 (depending on how busy we are & how much time I think you’ll need to get ready).
When I reach 0 I expect you to be in your seat, materials down, looking at me for instructions.
If you are speaking or moving after 0, I will move you down 1 level on the behaviour chart.
Those groups that are ready & attentive will get "group points" & students can get "Superstar" for being ready & focused.
Hands Up! & Leaving the Room
It is disruptive to students & teachers to call-out in class. Please raise your hand if you have a question, comment, or if you wish to leave the room for any reason.
*** Try to save all washroom & water breaks for recess & lunch time! ***
If you really need to be excused, please follow this system:
No Fingers up: I have a question/comment.
1 Finger up: I want to go to the washroom.
2 Fingers up: I want to go drink some water.
* If the teacher gives you permission to leave, please sign out in the back whiteboard & remember to take a girl’s or boy’s hall pass.
Hallway Procedure
Door Support Students will go down the hallway 1st to get the doors ready for our class to walk through.
When we are in the hallway, students must:
BE SILENT--No talking at all.
KEEP HANDS TO YOURSELF—No touching other students or the walls.
ALWAYS WALK—no running!
If we cannot follow the hallway rules, we will practice walking in the hall until we get it right.
Thank you for your cooperation!
